As it becomes colder outside many are thinking of having a vacation somewhere warmer. Before you go you should make sure that you're ready for anything! When you go on a trip you may not be eating as healthily as you usually do which can cause your body to react poorly.

To stay healthy on the road and during your vacation we have a few tips! Try to pack some 'healthy snacks' so that you won't stop and get pre packaged gas station snacks or stop at a fast food restaurant. It's wonderful for your body and your wallet will thank you for it!

When you get to your destination watching what you eat is a good idea. Often times when it is vacation time people eat more than usual or eat more junk food because they don't have a kitchen. Be sure to eat vegetables even when you are on vacation. Eating healthy will help keep your body's alkalinity and immune system up to par.

September at the farm

As September comes to a close we are quite busy at the farm! We harvested the last of the alfalfa just a few days ago. We have pretty much finished the stevia as well, it is sitting in our big greenhouse to dry. It's been fairly warm and sunny but today it's cold and cloudy! We'll have to wait a little longer for more sun so that our leaves can dry!

We will be starting on the olive leaf soon but not today it's much too cold, windy, and it seems to be threatening that it may rain. We recently received a new shipment of one size fits all king size grounding sheets. While supplies last we have them on sale for $140.00.

Diabetes and pH

Many people have been wondering how one's body pH connects with diabetes. After studying and researching we have concluded that diabetes is directly related to the pH of your body. A high acidic pH level puts all the body's organs at risk but we will focus on the pancreas and liver for now.

Due to the important role played by the liver in removing acid waste from the body, liver functions are particularly at risk when acids accumulate in the body. When acidity prevents the liver and pancreas from regulating blood sugar, the risk of diabetes will increase.

Not only does high acidity make you vulnerable to diabetes, the impact of diabetes on the body increases the level of acid waste. Therefore improper pH balance puts diabetics at greater risk for complications such as kidney failure, gangrene and blindness.

A diabetic suffers from an excess of glucose in the bloodstream, glucose that cannot be delivered properly to the body's cells due to lack of insulin.
when the glucose is not delivered properly to the body's cells the cell starts to malfunction. Acid that is not filtered out or stored in fact cells can attach to and harden the cell walls, further preventing the cells from absorbing nutrients. Eventurally the cells die, starting with the glucose-dependent eyes and the extremities where it is more difficult for nutrients to reach.

Without proper treatment, chronic acidity of the body leads to growth retardation, kidney stones, bone disease, chronic kidney disease, possible total kidney failure, and most degenerative diseases.

Fortunately, when you significantly reduce the acids in your body it is most likely to lead to organ regeneration and improved health. A diet that's more alkaline can help you reverse the damage caused by acidity and diabetes. The right combination of quality plant minerals, for example, can help your body break down and escort the excessive acid waste out of your body.

Hey guys, Phil here. Well a few days ago I was helping move some scaffolding on the farm so that we could continue painting the barn. I must have moved wrong or something because I felt a twinge in my back and when I stood up I couldn't really walk. I dealt with it for a few days thinking it would just get better on it's own like it usually did. Unfortunately this morning I woke up early this morning and when I went to stand up out of bed I couldn't hardly move! Cindy went and got me some pH Happy Caps and I went back to sleep. When I woke up three hours later I stood up and took a few steps before I realised 'Hey! My back doesn't hurt!'

If you've talked to anyone at Suede Hills Farm you know that we're very dedicated to telling absolutely everyone to check their pH. What is pH you ask? Well let's look at it this way. When you put wood into a fire and you let it burn out you're left with ash. The food you put in your body is the 'wood' and what's left after your stomach acid digests it is the 'ash'. Depending on what foods you eat your body is either acidic(below 7.0) or alkaline(7.35 or above). Why is this important? Well being too far on either side of 7.4 is bad for your body, as causes sickness and disease.

The body works best when it is at the pH 7.4 or higher. Phil keeps his pH at around 8.0 while Cindy has a pH of 7.6 or so. So you like the idea of never getting sick and always having more than enough energy in a day? Here's how you can get your pH up and keep it there. If you are acidic then your body is not working as it should be. For your body to function properly you need to get your body up to 7.4 and keep it there for at least three months. After the three months your body will have repaired everything that was not functioning properly and will no longer be working on your 'back up' of acid.

Ideally, to maintain your pH naturally a raw vegan diet is recommended with a diet made up of of 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic foods. However, if you're not willing to give up your milk, eggs, or meat in general there are several ways you can maintain your pH without giving up your 'comfort food'. Many of our customers and friends do not want to change their diet and decide to take this route. Cutting out processed and boxed foods are a must. If you're eating meat and other acidic foods you need to balance them out with fresh, alkaline foods such as fresh veggies and fruits. Packaged and frozen vegetables and fruits have often been cooked to death and then packaged with nasty chemicals to make them last longer.

Once you have cut out the over processed foods, you need to supplement the minerals that your body is lacking. The body cannot rid itself of acid unless it has minerals. Acid needs a mineral escort to leave the body, so if your body is lacking in minerals the acid can't leave. You can get these minerals from eating a lot of vegetables and fruits along with your regular diet(if you're not raw vegan) or you can take pH Happy Caps to boost your pH to where it should be. Many of our customers use the pH Happy Caps to boost their pH and then they maintain their 7.4 or more with their diet and our Alfalfa Powder which is full of minerals.

Common Chemicals Used in Five Common Personal Care Products

Do you know what is in your personal care products? Chances are that even if you read the ingredients list you wouldn't know much more than you did before! We have chosen two very common personal care products that contain some unsavory chemicals.

Our first personal care product is toothpaste. The most common chemical in toothpaste is Fluoride. This chemical is a KNOWN poison, that's why the back of your toothpaste says 'If large amount is swallowed call poison control centre'. Fluoride can corrode the tooth enamel, when swallowed can lead to Crohn's disease, can cause dental fluorosis, arthritis, and causes allergic reactions. Triclosan is used as an antimicrobial and has been shown to promote the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, interfere with thyroid hormones, and the American Medical Association suggests that consumers should check product ingredients for this chemical under the names Triclosan, tricocarban, quaternary ammonium, and microban.

Shampoo is our second most common personal care product that most people use. A very common chemical for this is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate(SLS) which is sometimes referred to as 'derived from coconut' but don't be fooled, it is chemically produced! SLS degenerates cell membranes and can change genetic information in cells(mutagenic) and can damage the immune system. It also causes eye irritation, skin rashes, hair loss, dandruff and allergic reactions. Diethylene Glycol(DEG) is often used in shampoo, these ethylene glycol groups are carcinogenic, toxic, easily absorbed through the skin, and mutagenic. FD &C Blue No. 1&2 which are artificial colouring dyes that are derived from crude oil, and synthesized from petroleum. These dyes can trigger a number of behavioural, comprehension, and health issues. They can also cause severe allergic reactions, asthma, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness, and cancer.
Do you use Deodorant or an Antiperspirant? If you do then these are the chemicals to watch for. Ethanol, which is on the EPA's Hazardous Waste List, is commonly used in deodorants. This chemical can create fatigue, can be irritating to the eyes and upper respiratory tract even in low concentrations.
Shaving Cream is a common personal care product you see in almost everyone's house. This shaving facilitator is filled with chemicals. One common chemical is Isobutane, which is used as a propellant, It is a suspected neurotoxicant and its use is banned in cosmetics by the EU. Another very common chemical in shaving cream is Acetic Acid which is toxic to the skin. Keep an eye out for Butylated Hydroxytoluene as well as it has been been identified as a suspected neurotoxin as well as a skin or sense organ toxin.

The last most common personal care product is gel/hair products. Hair products often contain Sodium Lauryl Suflate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate(SLS): Both of these are cheap, harsh detergents. These sulfates are generally derived from petroleum and often cause eye irritation, scalp irritation and tangled hair. Also watch out for Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl): Parabens are added to hair products because they act as preservatives. Unfortunately, parabens are also estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. Exposure to these parabens has been linked to Breast Cancer. Parabens are also known to cause allergic and skin reactions. The last and probably most common to watch for is Synthetic Colors & Dyes: Colors & Dyes are commonly used to make products look pretty. Colors & Dyes are created from coal tar and may deposit toxins onto the skin, which can cause irritation. Research has shown that nearly all synthetic colors and dyes are carcinogenic. Check your label for something that looks like this: FD&C Red No.6 or D&C No.6.

Avoiding these chemicals when you buy your personal care products is a great start on cutting out the unsavory chemicals that are put into our prepackaged products.You may want to look for 100% natural alternatives, as most of the big companies cut costs by using these and other chemicals because they are cheap.

Spring Greetings and the Health Benefits of Chocolate Mint Tea

How is everyone today? It certainly has been an interesting couple of months. With spring slow to start we're running around trying to get all our Stevia plants started in enough time to have them mature to plant! Fun Fruit Facts

With Spring knocking at our door I thought I'd put up some interesting fruit facts! Eating fruit is not only tasty but good for you body!

Apples - Apples are high in a photochemical called Quercetin. Quercetin prevents the release of histamine, which reduces inflammation. This is believed by researchers to play a key role in the apple's protective effects against heart disease. Apples are also a good source of pectin, which is known to help to lower cholesterol.

Bananas - Bananas are an excellent source for potassium. Potassium is a key electrolyte which plays important roles in regulating fluid balance, which is essential for maintaining a healthy blood pressure. Foods which are high in potassium are considered to be heart healthy because they help to lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease.

Cantaloupe - Cantaloupe contains a substance called adenosine which is used as a blood thinner and to relieve angina attacks in individuals who suffer from heart disease.

Oranges - Oranges are a good source of pectin, a dietary fiber which is well known for its effectiveness at lowering cholesterol levels. Whole fruit contains more pectin than fruit juice. Eating 15 grams or more of fruit pectin each day has been to reduce cholesterol levels by 10 %. One whole orange contains about 7.5 grams of pectin. This means that eating 2 oranges each day will result in a 20% reduced risk of heart disease!

Scientific Studies on pH and acid/alkaline diet

10 million Americans have osteoporosis with 17.9 billion spent per year in the US and 13.9 billion in Europe. Health-related benefits of a high intake of potassium-rich and bicarbonate-rich(veggies and fruit) on disease prevention have been gaining attention.

A positive link between Potassium-rich and bicarbonate-rich foods indices of bone health. Studies have shown specific associations between nutrients found in abundance in fruits and veggies and both axial and peripheral bone mass and markers of bone resorption. Women in the lowest quartile of intake for Potassium, Magnesium, fiber, vitamin C, Beta-Carotene had significantly lower lower lumbar spine and femoral neck Bone Mineral Density (BMD).

Another study women with low intakes of those same nutrients were found to have lower forearm bone mass and higher bone resorption. Studies from APOSSI(Aberdeen Prospective Osteoporosis Screening Study) has shown consistent longitudinal beneficial effect of fruit and veggies nutrients on bone loss in premenopausal women

Also if fruit intake raised from 3.6-9.5 daily servings decreased urinary calcium excretion from 157 to 110 mg/d. –Higher fruit and vegetable diet reduced the “Acid Load” compared to the control diet and conserved calcium for bone retention-

This diet reduced bone fragmentation by 8-10% and bone resorption by 16-18%. A recent Swiss study suggests a strong beneficial effect of alkali supplementation in osteopenic women.

Eat Healthy!

           Okay, so many people are trying different diets, or are practically starving themselves to lose a couple of pounds. What people don't realise is that these diets are only a short term solution and they usually eventually gain the weight back. If you truly want to be healthy you need to do a few things.

           To truly be healthy you must make a few changes to your diet. I know this is cliche but eat your veggies! You mother always said it, and guess what. She was right! The more greens you eat the healthier you will be. Kale, spinach, alfalfa, broccoli, asparagus, whatever it is...green is good for you!

           The next thing to do on your road to a healthier lifestyle is to not eat so much meat be it red or white. We are raw vegans and eat no meat, yet we are healthy and happy. Want to know how? We eat alfalfa every day, we put two Tablespoons of our Organic Alfalfa into our breakfast every morning(we also eat it for lunch). Alfalfa is really a good source of not only protein but also many minerals and vitamins. You don't need to eat meat at all, but if you're making a small step you will want to cut back on your meat consumption.

           Finally, if you're looking to live a healthy lifestyle and lose weight because of that you need to cut out all processed foods from your diet. Chips, sodas, frozen meals all have one thing in common. They have been processed to death. Almost literally as most of them have near 0 nutritional value. Not to mention all the preservatives and artificial flavourings and colourings! They're just plain not good for you.

            So if you're trying to keep that New Year's Resolution, or you just want to be healthier you should eat more greens, eat less or no meat, and try to not eat so many processed foods. It's just that simple!

Disturbing Information I found out about Splenda

Okay so in my researching throughout the day I found out a few things. Splenda, which I have known is bad for you for a while has just gotten more infamous on my list. Do you use Splenda? Most people do because they've tried the White Processed/Bleached Stevia Powders and didn't like the bitter aftertaste. The truth is here that Splenda is a sugar derivative. Basically they take sugar and add three Chlorine anions(Cl-) to sugar to make it different. No big deal right?

Wrong! Apparently Splenda, when ingested is broken down into Formaldehyde. If this sounds familiar that's because it was used for a very long time in preserving objects such as internal organs for future study. (I'm sure most people remember dissecting a frog or cat, up until recently they used formaldehyde) The FDA says Splenda is still okay, however there have been many studies where the lab mice produced cancer, the male mice became infertile and the female mice had more miscarriages and pregnancy problems.

What I've also found is that for every tiny packet you use(in which you think there are 0 Calories) there are actually 4 Cal. There is a loophole somewhere that says if there are less than 10 Cal per ounce(or something like that) that they can claim 0 Calories! That's horrible!

Anyways, I had never known how Splenda was made, but now that I know I'm definitely against it!

Look the whole point of this is...the less processed your food and sweeteners are the better for you they're going to be! The less chemicals used on your foods the better! Make sure you read the ingredients on the box of Stevia or sweetener you buy, you might be surprised! If you're looking for an alternative sweetener and want to try Stevia, make sure the powder you buy is GREEN! If it's not green it's been chemically processed!

           So it's a new year and I know people around the world are making resolutions about losing weight or eating healthier. Most of us have, at one point or another made a resolution about getting fit, losing weight, or eating healthier. If you haven't cut out those nasty fake sugars such as Splenda or other sugar substitutes, that is a good way to keep your resolution.

In a food processor add 3 large avocados, 2 T extra virgin coconut oil, 8 Medjool dates, 2 T mesquite (high protein sweetener yeah!), 3/4 tsp green stevia, 1/2 cup raw carob powder, 1 tsp peppermint oil, dash sea salt. Blend until smooth.

I poured it into a pie plate sprinkled with ground flax seeds mixed with a bit of water for a crust.

Cashew Chocolate Mousse

Soak 1 1/2 cups cashews then blend with 1/2 - 3/4 cup water (add gradually), 2 tbsp lucuma powder, 1 tbsp mesquite, 1 1/2 tbsp cacao powder, 1/2 tsp organic green stevia, 2 tbsp coconut sugar or maple syrup. Blend in a blender until well combined into a whipping kreme like consistency.

Pair with strawberries or raspberries with a mint leaves

Decadent Chocolate Sauce

Simply mix: 1 tbsp of raw cacao or carob powder, 1 tsp tahini or almond butter, 1/2 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp maple syrup, 2 tsp of water, 1/8 tsp organic green stevia with a dash of cinnamon.

Optional: add 1 tsp mesquite powder + 1 tsp filtered water.

RAW VEGAN EGGNOG

You will need:

1 1/2 cups almonds
soaked for 8 hours
3 cups filtered water
3/4 t Suede Hills stevia
1/8-1/4 cup maple syrup (dep on desired sweetness) or replace with 4 - 6 Medjool dates
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch clove
3 tbsp coconut butter (opt but highly recommended!)
dash sea salt
1 tsp nutmeg
Directions:
Add almonds and water in to a blender for 2- 3 minutes. Strain the almond mylk using a nut mylk bag or fine mesh strainer. Pour the almond mylk back into blender and blend with ingredients to make a delicious, healthy 'for you and planet' holiday drink

Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Blend 1 avocado with 2 tbsp yacon syrup, 2 tbsp raw organic cacao powder, 1/4 tsp Suede Hill Stevia, 1/2 tbsp mesquite powder.
