Vitamin D and it's benefits!
With winter coming, and the days growing shorter we want to focus on Vitamin D. This vitamin is also referred to as the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’ because when we spend time in the sun our bodies actually produce Vitamin D. This vitamin is amazing and has been proven to help prevent Arthritis, Birth Defects, Cancer, Depression, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Heart attacks, Hypertension and helps prevent pregnancy problems! The main use of Vitamin D in your body, however, is to regulate the use of calcium and phosphorus in your body. It also helps your body properly form strong and healthy teeth and bones.
Often Vitamin D deficiencies are diagnosed in the winter when most people aren’t outside much and their bodies can’t create enough of the vitamin to go around. When your body does not have enough Vitamin D the most common symptom is depression, often found during the winter months, but extreme deficiencies cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
As the days shorten and grow colder we will be spending less time outside and when we are outside we are usually bundled up. Less sunshine means our bodies create less Vitamin D and we need to supplement this loss with our diet. The problem is that Vitamin D is not found in many foods.
Many places will try to tell you that Vitamin D can be found in factory made supplements and in cows milk. However, these supplements are chemically made, often with fillers, and thus are not natural. These unnatural supplements do not break down in your body correctly, and unless you are a baby cow the cows milk does not break down correctly either.
Vitamin D can be naturally found in the mature Alfalfa plant. Alfalfa is a natural vegan source of Vitamin D. Every other source has to be 'fortified' with chemically made vitamin D which your body can not break down or use properly.
